Do you see a man who is wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him. Proverbs 26:12
The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing but to us who are being saved, it is the power of God.
For since in the wisdom of God the world in its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.
The foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.
God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise.
As we look at these verses, it is apparent that God’s wisdom and man’s wisdom are two different things. Man without God certainly has wisdom, but it is deficient. Man without God has eyes that cannot see unless God reveals true wisdom to him. Man has ears to hear but cannot hear unless God opens the ears to understand God. Man can be blind and deaf spiritually if the Holy Spirit is not inside that person to empower him or her.
So how do we get the help of the Holy Spirit? Answer: Faith in Christ.
What separates man from God is sin. Even though someone may have a high IQ, that is not sufficient to understand the mind of God.
It is like a windshield covered with dirt clouding our vision. Clean the windshield of life and see with eyes of faith what cannot be seen physically. Believers live in a supernatural world while unbelievers cannot see beyond the natural.
God’s ways are higher than our ways. We need to acknowledge that truth otherwise we fall into pride thinking that God is simply not necessary.
If we choose to do that, God will not force us to change. But if we confess our sin and come clean, we will be given the gift of sight.
That is the work of the Holy Spirit. Conviction of sin to set us free.
Sin is the issue. Look at the verses below. Christ is the Light of the world. He drives out the darkness of sin to set us free.
Only the forgiveness of sin through the cross can remove sin. But, to choose sin is to choose darkness and that is foolish.
Who would choose blindness?
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God. John 3:16-21
Who would choose blindness? There is a way that seems right to a man but in the end is death (Proverbs 14:12). To choose death is foolish and yet Jesus clearly puts the choice before every single person. We have the opportunity now to live free of sin. Find out more on our Next Steps page. The wisest thing we could ever do is come to the cross and trust Jesus to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Christ demonstrates His love for us in that while we were still sinners, He died for us. That seems foolish to the natural man. But, we would die in our sins if Christ did not die in our place. The wisdom of God required the death of Jesus. When Peter said to Jesus, “Surely Lord, you must never let anyone harm you”, Christ answered, “Get behind me Satan for you do not have in mind the things of God but the things of men (Mark 8:33)“. The cross is foolishness to those who are perishing. But, God states most clearly in John 3:16 that He desires that the entire world be saved and not perish. We must choose to believe or not believe. Jesus Christ is God and in Him are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. Let the Holy Spirit convince you of that Truth. Believe.
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them. John 3:36
