We cannot comprehend the love of God. It far exceeds our understanding. One reason for that is the fact that we never deserved it and never will.
We tend to think that love must be based on something – beauty, being good, religious observance. We reason that there must be a reason for love.
But God’s love is unreasonable! We cannot tie His love to a worthy cause in us. God’s love is a pure 100% GIFT that He has chosen to give apart from any merit on our part.
So what connects the love of God to mankind? The answer is FAITH. We must choose to believe that God loves us because it is UNCONDITIONAL and undeserved.
Every single day, we fall short of meeting God’s perfection. But, that does not change the character of God. We cannot control God, We cannot obligate God.
We can only believe God to be so gracious that His love is perfect toward us apart from our behavior. On our best behavior, we cannot increase the love of God toward us and on our worst behavior, we cannot decrease His love. If we could do that it would be conditional.
We must believe in the perfect love of God to receive it. Then and only then can we give love in the same way God gives it. Perhaps the best human picture of the love of God is the marriage covenant. Couples promise to love one another for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness or in health. Each spouse promises love no matter what the future may hold. Those vows are intended to keep love forever. God’s love includes faithfulness to His promises to keep us forever. His love is offered to us all.
This Valentine’s Day, watch the Valentine video “Give Your Heart to God”. Consider the perfect love of God. We are invited to love Him because He first loved us.
JOHN 3:16
If you have not given your heart to God, this would be quite appropriate for Valentine’s Day.
He wants your heart just like a couple in love give a love to one another that is priceless. God wants us to choose to love Him by believing that He loved us first through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross. The love of God extends to every single human being. God does not want any single person to perish (2 Peter 3:9).
But, just as a marriage takes two people, a love relationship with God requires the proper response from us.
