We enjoy the freedom to say and do whatever we want thanks to the sacrifices of countless lives who shed their blood on our behalf. Others died to set us free, our liberty is precious. We have a deep responsibility to use that freedom to serve not to be served. Christ laid down His life for us to set us free from sin. There was no other option. Sin is real and the tyranny of our fallen human condition can only be broken through Jesus Christ. Without the shedding of blood, mankind is doomed to slavery, the exact opposite of freedom.
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free (Galatians 5:1). But does that freedom really mean that we can do whatever we want, whenever we want? Freedom requires limiting our personal freedoms out of love for others. Love requires sacrifice. The loss of lives in WWI and II, Korea, Vietnam and the Civil War brought great pain to the spouses and families who did not see their loved ones return. Over one million soldiers paid the ultimate price for us. So what are we going to do with our freedom as we remember these fatalities on this Memorial Day?
“You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.” Galatians 5:13-15
Freedom from sin does not equal the freedom to commit sin.
We are set free to do good works not to be selfish. Our freedom needs to be controlled by God otherwise like a car without brakes, we will crash and burn as individuals and as a nation.
We are not given a license to sin. Freedom is not absolute, freedom must be governed. Think of all the planes flying around us, they are governed by an Air Traffic Controller. A Higher Power enables all of us to live in safety. But, take away that Power and you have anarchy, civil war.
Watch out or you will be destroyed by one another. America is no doubt the most blessed nation on the face of the earth but we can throw it all away. We are seeing the shocking consequences for abandoning God. Sin is like a cancer threatening to destroy us from within. What is the Answer?
